RECENT PRESS RELEASE

(02/2011) DELEC Commentary System installed at  tpc in Zürich

(09/2010) DELEC Intercom to be world largest Broadcasting House [+]

London, September 2010: DELEC and Aspen Media are to undertake the second phase of the BBC contract for the provision of a DELEC intercom system in the rebuilt Broadcasting House, London. The system was installed during Phase 1 of the Corporation’s W1 Project, which was to completely refurbish the original 1930’s art-deco building, Broadcasting House in Portland Place W1. Phase 2 involves building the world’s largest television and radio online newsroom. When complete the development will be the home of the Broadcaster’s Audio and Music Division, BBC News and the World Service.
This second phase of the contract for BBC W1 comms, awarded to DELEC in 2004 following an EU competitive tender, will result in the largest intercom system in the world, widening the current Phase 1 system from 2552 to 4992 bi-directional ports. As a consequence, the expanded system will incorporate a 3072 x 3072 central router that can accommodate further expansion to 4096 x 4096 routing if required to meet future requirements. The router connects to a number of intercom frames via standard Ethernet links, which also allow the seamless connection of remote sites to the Broadcasting House intercom, with access to the full facilities and quality of the host system.
The occupation of the Broadcasting House extension will be a staged process, so DELEC intercom’s unique ability to operate separate operational areas as autonomous islands, is essential to ensure each area can be installed, tested and connected to the routers without disturbing the operation of any other part of the system. These operational islands permit each area’s talkback and intercom to be managed locally and allow for a more efficient use of valuable central router capacity.
The new system include over 300 desktop and rack mount panels, all offering 18 character labelling that is the standard in DELEC intercom and will operate at 48 kHz 24-bit.
DELEC’s MD Donald Dilocker said, “We’ve developed a completely new platform to meet the increasingly demanding requirements for facility wide and inter-site intercom. Our intention is that this becomes a multifaceted audio network capable of running many applications, the second of which is now intercom; the first being our commentary system for large sporting and entertainment events.”

(10/2009) "La Bohème at the High Rise" - Successful Premiere for DELEC´s New Commentary System [+]

Zurich, October 2009: On 29th September, Swiss television broadcast a very special live performance on four channels plus the Franco-German TV network ARTE: Puccini’s La Bohème – staged at a high rise and a neighbouring shopping precinct in Bern. The various scenes in different locations only came together as a coherent whole for the audience in front of the TV set at home. And furthermore, only these viewers could hear the complex audio mix of the orchestra at the precinct and the soloists at the various scenes.
tv productioncenter Zurich ag (tpc) brought the opera production into reality for Swiss television. This technically complex production saw the first use of their new oratis commentary system by DELEC. Located centrally in Zurich, the system, which had only just recently been shipped, served as a convenient interpretation system. It was used live to interpret the multilingual commentary into the two most important languages used in Switzerland: German and French. Both language versions were used for the ARTE program as well. In fact, this was also the production premiere of the oratis commentary system, which was only introduced in spring 2009!

An independent oratis commentary system was used for each language. Of the six commentator terminals available on each system, three and five respectively were used by the interpreters on this occasion. The interpreters were immediately enthusiastic about the user-friendliness of the units. And as Alfio Di Fazio, audio project manager at tpc and in charge of planning the technical side of the interpretation environment in Zurich puts it: “Regarding the audio quality, too, the new oratiscommentary systems kept the promises DELEC had made in the run-up. Both of them passed their initial live tests very positively.”
The two systems will shortly become parts of fixed installations in large tpc OB vehicles. They will then be used mostly at sports events. During the coming months, three more trucks will be furnished with trend-setting DELEC systems.
Apart from the user-friendliness and exceptional audio quality already mentioned, oratis commentary systems score with their consistent networkability over managed Gigabit Ethernet. This even allows existing networks to be used as a basis for a new oratis installation. Therefore, cabling effort and cost can be significantly reduced, for example, at a sports event in a pre-wired stadium. On-site rigging times are thus minimised.

Rapid rigging, smooth integration into existing infrastructure, and the highest levels of reliability were also critical for the first application of the systems at La Bohème. Donald Dilocker, founder and CEO of DELEC, says: “Now we are waiting eagerly for the first large-scale deployment at sports events where the commentator terminals and the entire commentary system will prove their comprehensive feature set and functionality!”

(10/2009) AES 2009: Innovations in Europe - DELEC presents New Oratis Product Family [+]

Integrated Intercom and Commentary Systems with Gigabit Ethernet Network Introduced

New York, October 2009: At this year's AES Convention in New York, DELEC, renowned manufacturer of digital intercom systems based in Göllheim (Germany), will introduce their trend setting new oratis product family to an international audience. "The new oratis product line is much more powerful than its predecessor. Its innovative networked basic structure is the perfect platform for a host of operational areas, of which the classical application as an intercom system is only one," says DELEC founder Donald Dilocker about the new development.
At the AES, various components from this new range of intercom and communication building blocks will be on display at work. The outstanding new feature is the complete networkability of all oratis components using managed Gigabit Ethernet. Even pre-existing networks can be used as the basis for a new oratis installation.

Highly Intuitive: The New Intercom Line
The intercom line subscriber units have been redeveloped from scratch. They feature special displays showing full text messages in all world languages. When redesigning the units, the greatest emphasis was placed on maximum readability in all lighting conditions and from any viewing angle and the developers were also focused tightly on intuitive operation.

Completely New: The Networked Commentary System
oratis as a pure intercom system is a thing of the past. Today, using largely the same components, a networked commentary system can also be created – a genuine innovation in the world of broadcasting! For this purpose, DELEC has designed a commentary terminal that also connects to an oratis matrix frame over a managed Gigabit Ethernet network. The system provides all gain, mixing, and processing parameters for up to three commentators; one of whom can even be a roving reporter using a standard cell-phone! The first of the new systems has already been delivered in September 2009.

Extremely Compact
At the AES, a networked set-up including the TALK 16 19" subscriber unit, the DESK 16 desktop subscriber unit and the COM3 commentary terminal will be displayed for demonstration purposes. The backbone of each oratis system is a matrix frame – a fully summing audio router equipped according to customer requirements. In comparison with its predecessor, the new oratis offers double the packing density: In a height of just 4 rack units, a single 19" matrix frame can provide up to 120 subscriber-unit ports, support up to 12 commentary terminals, or offer a combination of both. For larger systems, matrix frames can be networked, so that even campus wide installations can be realized.

Outstanding Audio Quality
In order to meet the demanding requirements of a commentary system, the oratis audio format follows the established studio standard: 24 bit, 48 kHz with an enhanced resolution of 32 bits internally. The consistent flexible application of FPGA chips, currently the state-of-the-art technology, allowed the DELEC developers to design a highly flexible and future-proof system.
Dilocker: "With the new oratis, DELEC has positioned itself at the forefront of this technology!"

(10/2009) Early First Use of DELEC's New Commentary System [+]

oratis Installed on OB Truck in Switzerland

New York, October 2009: Swiss tv productioncenter zurich ag (tpc), the total services provider for audio-visual productions, is the first customer for the new DELEC commentary systems. A total of five OB vehicles – three existing ones plus two new HD trucks – are now equipped with trend setting oratis commentary systems by DELEC. The trucks will be used by tpc as well as by the Swiss stations Télévision Suisse Romande TSR (French-speaking area) and Radiotelevisione svizzera di lingua italiana RSI (Italian-speaking area). One system is already delivered and was used for the live production of a flash-mob opera in a Swiss shopping mall.
The newly developed oratis commentary terminal provides all gain, mixing, and processing parameters for up to three commentators; one of whom can even be a roving reporter using a standard cell-phone! Each truck includes an overall system made up of six terminals. Thus, a single vehicle can be used to manage large events with up to six separate commentary positions with two or three commentators at each location.
A significant feature of oratis commentary systems is the harnessing of managed Gigabit Ethernet for all network connections. Even pre-existing networks can be used as the basis for a new oratis installation. Therefore, cabling effort can be significantly reduced, for example, at a sports event in a pre-wired stadium. On site rigging times are thus minimised.

The systems for tpc, TSR and RSI will be integrated into the Tellix intercom system frequently used in Switzerland. Tellix operating modules will be integrated into the commentary terminals. All necessary audio and control data will be exchanged with the OB truck over the commentary terminal's gigabit network. Therefore, no extra cable need to be run to the terminal.

Peter Flückiger, project manager audio at tpc and in charge of implementing oratis commentary systems on the vehicles is already convinced by the performance of the new systems: "tpc contributed many relevant ideas to the production development of the new oratis commentary system. The units are now perfectly attuned to the on-site requirements and integrate seamlessly into our modern, totally digital HD trucks."
He considers the development based completely on FPGA chips to be an immense benefit. In the commentary terminal, these chips replace the fixed signal routes of traditional circuits with virtual software wiring. By simply reprogramming the FPGAs, DELEC can alter the internal wiring of the terminal and customise it to individual requirements.

The commentary systems debut is already scheduled: Late in September, at the high-profile flash-mob performance of Puccini's famous opera La Bohème at a tower block and in a shopping precinct in Bern, the units will support the multilingual commentaries necessary in Switzerland.
Since 2007, tpc have also been running an oratis intercom system in their digital TV Control Room 6, which is mostly used for sports programmes. Positive experiences with this system have also encouraged tpc to equip their new TV Control Room 3 at Zurich with oratis intercom components.
